Bone mass peaks in early adulthood and slowly declines after middle age. In osteoporosis the bones become fragile and can fracture after a minor fall, often without any earlier warning.
Who is at higher risk?
Women after menopause, people with a family history of osteoporosis, those on long-term steroids, and people with low vitamin D, low body weight or certain hormonal conditions are at higher risk.
Everyday protection
Weight-bearing exercise such as walking and strength training, enough calcium from food, adequate vitamin D, not smoking and limiting alcohol all help. Vitamin D deficiency is very common in India and is worth checking.
Testing
A bone density scan (DEXA) can assess your bones before a fracture occurs. Ask your doctor whether and when you should have one.
